Victoria – In the public interest, Police Complaint Commissioner, Prabhu Rajan, has appointed a retired judge to conduct a review on the record to determine whether Constable Canon Wong and Constable Mitchel Tong of the Vancouver Police Department should be required to provide an oral apology consistent with Indigenous law to a Heiltsuk Nation grandfather and his granddaughter who was 12 years old at the time of the incident (the Applicants). Victoria - Adjudicator Elizabeth Arnold-Bailey, retired BC Supreme Court Justice, will preside over the hearing into the actions of seven Vancouver police (VPD) officers on August 13, 2015 and the subsequent death of 33-year-old Myles Gray after police responded to a 911 call and used significant force to subdue and restrain him. Victoria – The total number of files opened by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) grew by nearly five per cent, investigations increased by 10 per cent, and the use of early resolution spiked last fiscal year according to the office’s 2024/25 annual report tabled in the Legislature today. Victoria – In the public interest, Police Complaint Commissioner Prabhu Rajan has appointed a retired judge to independently review a disciplinary decision concerning the conduct of former Vancouver Police Department member Keiron McConnell and determine the appropriate disciplinary outcome. Following an investigation, the police discipline authority had imposed a 10-day suspension without pay – a penalty the Commissioner considers insufficient given the serious nature of the misconduct. Victoria - The Police Complaint Commissioner has called a public hearing into the conduct of three current and three former Nelson Police Department officers in a WhatsApp chat group allegedly containing racist, sexist, discriminatory and inappropriate posts. The public hearing will determine whether the officers committed discreditable conduct and neglect of duty for failing to report or shut the electronic chat down in support of a respectful workplace.
