The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) is welcoming Indigenous applicants to join our team. About the Role

To help advance the OPCC’s commitments to reconciliation, the Indigenous Initiatives Lead will work closely with senior management and staff to develop, guide, and implement initiatives related to:

  • Relationshipbuilding with Indigenous leadership, organizations, and communities across BC.
  • Strengthening internal capacity at the OPCC to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and related commitments.
  • Improvements to service delivery for Indigenous complainants and their engagement with the police complaints process.
  • Coordinating training and professional development to support cultural competency, humility, trauma informed, and culturally safe practices for all staff.
  • Establishing and tracking key performance measures that support organizational priorities in this area.

 

About You

This role involves navigating complex and sensitive issues related to the civilian oversight of municipal police, policing, and the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in BC. The work may include exposure to challenging subject matter involving trauma, conflict, and diverse perspectives.

You bring strength in relationship‑building, collaboration, and cultural humility. You are comfortable working across different contexts, supporting staff learning, and advising leadership on issues involving Indigenous communities. You understand how to work effectively within legislative frameworks such as the Police Act to identify opportunities, influence practice, and guide advancements in reconciliation in ways that are both impactful and grounded in existing legislation.

Work environment

This position is eligible for a hybrid work model which allows for greater flexibility. Travel will be a requirement for this position. The pace of work may involve shifting priorities and deadlines. Required Qualifications:

  • In keeping with the principles of merit, and recognizing the value of lived experience, applications will be restricted to those from Indigenous applicants.
  • Post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Legal Studies, Anthropology, Political Science, Communications, Social Work, or other related field.
    • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. An equivalent combination of education includes successful completion of post-secondary courses in a relevant field and a minimum of two years experience building effective working relationships with Indigenous communities and organizations and program development.
  • Minimum two years experience working effectively within legislative, policy or regulatory frameworks.
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience related to the development and implementation of Indigenous initiatives within a program setting (e.g., government, academic institution, First Nations), including liaising and engaging with First Nations, Indigenous communities and other organizations.
  • Two years of experience in project management or coordination, and leading or coaching staff in the development and implementation of projects.
  • Experience building relationships with Indigenous leadership, organizations, or communities.
  • Experience or training in trauma-informed and/or culturally safe practices.
  • Successful completion of an Enhanced Security Screening will be required.

Financial assistance may be offered as part of the total compensation package for successful candidate(s) that must relocate to Victoria/Vancouver. Relocation allowances will be in accordance with the information here.
